Robert Lewis Burns Jr. better known as Bob Burns helped to form “My Backyard” in 1964. After numerous name changes, they settled on “Lynyrd Skynyrd”. Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom were also founding members.

Burns played on the band’s first two official albums: (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd) and Second Helping. (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd) featured several of their most famous songs including “Gimme Three Steps” and “Free Bird”.

Bob died in a single car crash after hitting a mailbox and tree on a sharp curve in Cartersville, Georgia, shortly after leaving his home on April 3, 2015. He was 64 years old.
