Dan Tana, a former professional football player from Yugoslavia founded the restaurant Dan Tana’s in 1964. Tana had formerly been the maitre d’ at another Hollywood restaurant, La Scala. Since its opening, it has been a favorite of Hollywood and film industry personalities and professionals. It’s location next door to the Troubadour guarantees that a celebrity sighting could happen at any time.
In 1975, Glenn Frey and Don Henley of the Eagles wrote the lyrics to “Lyin’ Eyes” on a napkin at table 4 here. While there, they started talking about beautiful women who were cheating on their husbands and Glenn came up with “She can’t even hide those lyin’ eyes” when he noticed a woman with a much older man.
The song was the second single from their One of These Nights album, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Frey also donated original train tracks from the old Pacific Red Car line to the restaurant. Those still hang on the walls today.
