Former Location –
Yep, there really was a Mars Hotel… it was only a few blocks away from where the 1974 Grateful Dead album “From the Mars Hotel” was recorded at the Automatt. Parts of the 1972 video for “Jean Genie
” by David Bowie were filmed in front of the Mars Hotel with model Cyrinda Foxe.
From the Mars Hotel was the Dead’s seventh studio album.

It was demolished in the 70’s, or maybe 80’s to make way for a big convention center. One single photo of the real mars Hotel exists and I finally put it together.
I watched the Mars Hotel get torn down, sometime before July, 1981, from my office at 657 Mission St, approximately a block north, and about two-three east.
There’s a film on Youtube called The Grateful Dead Movie (or something like that). At one brief interval, a mechanical digger pushes over the last standing remnant; the doorway with the sign over it. The movie was released in 1977
