Sam was a singer and was best known for being one of the founding members of the The Impressions. In the 1950s, he, along with brothers Arthur and Richard Brooks and Curtis Mayfield, founded the music group originally called the Roosters, but later changed to the Impressions after baritone Jerry Butler’s addition.

Sam was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Impressions in 1991.

Sam died on August 4, 2022 at the age of 87
