Shannon had recorded the hit song “Runaway” in 1961. It stayed #1 on the charts for four straight weeks. His hit “Runaway” enjoyed renewed popularity as the theme to the 1986 TV series “Crime Story.”
On February 8, 1990, he shot himself in the head here. He was cremated, and his ashes were given to relatives.

I had just joined the U.S. Army in 1960. His song “Runnaway” came out when I was in basic training at Ft. Dix, N.J. That song just motivated me to get through basic training. I know this is not much; but that man and his music touched my life. May Del Shannon rest in peace and may the Lord bless his soul.

Wonderful story! Del Shannon (Uncle Chuck) was a kind soul, evils of prescription drugs got the best of him.
Good to hear your kind words. Del Shannon was my Uncle Chuck. I would listen to him play his tunes at family reunions about every August.
I remember going to see the great Del Shanon in England, not too long before he died. He came on stage , complete with cowboy hat, not saying a word he hit the guitar and “attacked” the mic, he was clearly a man on a mission. He took no prisoners that night……a superb performance!

There is Shanondale Road off Sierra Hwy in Acton, CA not far from his home in Santa Clarita. My parents lived in Agua Dulce, between those two towns. This road was probably named in honor of him.
The home was built in 1987 just three years before he passed. Built to order, chosen details to enjoy for years to come, such a shame that his life was cut tragically short. He was working on a new album and and his popularity was regaining. Rest in Peace, Del.
Although he left this world before I was born, Del Shannon is and always will be my hero. I do music on a much smaller scale than he did, and when my first performance ended up being in Santa Clarita about 15 minutes from this house, it was like kismet for me. The morning of the show, I asked my buddy if we could go by this house so I could see it. Although I couldn’t see it too well because of the way it’s positioned, I took a picture with the address sign out in front by the road. I like to think Del was there with me for my first show.
