On November 29, 2001, George passed away due to what his Los Angeles County death certificate listed as “metastatic non-small cell lung cancer”. The place of death was a house rented and then owned by Paul McCartney.

Within ten hours of the body being wrapped in a shawl and covered with holy oils, it was cremated inside a cardboard box. The ashes would be scattered in India’s Ganges river.

“He left this world as he lived in it, conscious of God, fearless of death, and at peace, surrounded by family and friends,” read the official statement. “He often said, ‘Everything else can wait, but the search for God cannot wait,’ and ‘Love one another’”.
