On October 30, 2002, DJ Jam Master Jay, who was born Jason William Mizell, was shot and killed while working at his recording studio in Jamaica, Queens. Jay was the DJ of the hip hop group Run–D.M.C.

In August, 2020, federal prosecutors announced charges against two men accused of killing Mizell over what was apparently a drug deal gone bad.

He was 37 years old and is buried at the Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum in Hartsdale, New York.
