On June 29, 1979, while on tour promoting his “Thanks, I’ll Eat It Here” solo album, George died the morning after a show at Washington, D.C.’s Lisner Auditorium. His death is commonly attributed to a heart attack, but with contributing factors including an accidental heroin overdose, obesity, heavy drug use, and possibly other health stresses.
He was 34 years old. His ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean from his fishing boat.

I think it was a “speedball” which is heroin and cocaine but I could be wrong. I’d like to know the story of anyone knows.
I heard the same many years ago. I would be interested if he was alone when he died.
No, his wife was in the hotel room with him, and his band mates were in several other rooms. Although George was a well-known hard drug user, it wasn’t an overdose per se, he and some other members had been out partying all night after their performance at Lisner; they got back to their rooms about dawn and George died in his sleep shortly after. Chain smoking, over-eating, alcoholism, hard drug use and severe sleep apnea can get you even at age 34.
If anyone knows what became of Lowell’s fishing boat I would really like to find it
