Jeff Buckley, born September 17, 1966, had released his acclaimed album Grace in 1994, and by early 1997 he had moved to Memphis, Tennessee to work on his follow-up project, initially titled Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk (later released posthumously). He was the son of another singer/songwriter, Tim Buckley and is probably best known for his cover of Leonard Cohen’s song “Hallelujah“

On May 29, 1997 Jeff was waiting for his band to arrive and decided to take a swim in the Wolf River when he was caught in the wake of a passing boat. His body was not found until June 4, he was 30 years old.

The body of water involved is the Wolf River Harbor (sometimes referred to as simply Wolf River), a slower-moving channel connected to the Mississippi River, near downtown Memphis. His autopsy showed no signs of drugs or alcohol in his system, and the death was ruled as an accidental drowning.
