While staying at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas as the first part of the Who’s 2002 tour, John Entwistle consumed more alcohol and cocaine then his heart could handle. He spent time at the hotel with a female companion. When she awoke the next morning, she found him unresponsive in the room. He died here on June 27.

The official ruling by the Clark County coroner (Nevada) described the death as accidental, resulting from a heart attack induced by cocaine use, in a person with underlying heart disease.

It was not determined to be a pure overdose in the classic sense. The coroner noted that the amount of cocaine was “significant” but not necessarily enormous; the key was the interaction with his poor heart condition.
