John Graham “Mitch” Mitchell, the drummer who provided the back-beat of the Jimi Hendrix Experience on rock classics died of natural causes (he had been in ill health for many years due to alcohol-related problems) on November 12, 2008 at the age of 62. He died in his hotel room at The Benson in Portland, Oregon after completing an 18-city tour of the US celebrating Hendrix’s music.

Mitch played on The Jimi Hendrix Experience albums, “Are You Experienced“, “Axis: Bold As Love” and “Electric Ladyland“. Additionally, he played on Hendrix’s “The Cry of Love“, Rainbow Bridge” and “War Heroes” as well as other artist’s albums.

Considered one of rock’s greatest drummers, Mitchell was behind the drum kit at Hendrix’s legendary sets at the Woodstock Music & Art Fair, the Monterey Pop Festival and the Isle of Wight Festival.
