Randy California

Randy California

Randy California was the guitarist and centerpiece of the rock group Spirit. Jimi Hendrix gave Randy California (born Randy Wolfe) his famous stage name in 1966 while they played together in the band Jimmy James and the Blue Flames in New York City to distinguish him from another Randy in the group, Randy Palmer whom Hendrix dubbed “Randy Texas.”

He died in Molokai, Hawaii, on Jan. 2, 1997,  as he attempted to help his 12-year-old son Quinn, who had gotten caught in a riptide. California managed to push his son to safety, but could not save himself.
