On October 21, 1995 Shannon Hoon, the singer for Blind Melon died in the band’s tour bus in a parking lot next to the InterContinental Hotel. Blind Melon were on tour supporting their album Soup. The probable cause of death was a drug overdose.
Hoon had a known history of substance abuse and had entered rehab at least twice (May 1994 and June 1995).
The band brought on a counselor for the tour to help Hoon, but that counselor was let go shortly after the tour began.
On October 20, 1995 (the night before his death), Hoon performed in Houston at the club “Numbers”. The next day, the band was due to play in New Orleans.
The following day, during a sound check on October 21, the bus driver/sound manager found Hoon unresponsive, and an ambulance was requested.
Shannon is buried at the Dayton Cemetery in Dayton, Indiana.
