After a long fought battle with emphysema, John died at Marin General Hospital following an asthma attack on May 29, 1989. He died at the age of 45 after a music career that covered 25 years, most notably with Quicksilver Messenger Service.
Quicksilver Messenger Service, also know as just “Quicksilver” or “QMS” by fans, was formed in 1965 in San Francisco. They achieved wide popularity in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as with psychedelic rock fans worldwide. John played guitar for QMS from 1965-1971 and again in 1975.
In 2003, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #32 of their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. After leaving Quicksilver John formed “Copperhead” and was a member of the San Francisco All Stars. He also played with Janis Joplin on the Dick Cavett Show.
Per John’s request, his ashes were scattered over Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, CA.
