Barney Kessel was one of the most in-demand session guitarists in America during the 1960’s. He was a member of the session musicians now usually called the The Wrecking Crew.
On Pete Townshend’s 1983 album “Scoop“, he paid homage to Barney with “To Barney Kessel”.
Barney opened his guitar shop which, in its heyday was where many musicians went for their equipment or repairs, partly due to his fame and experience as well as its proximity to Capitol Records and its great selection.
On any given day, Frank Zappa, and members of The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield as well as Eric Clapton and John Lennon could be found shopping here.

I studied from Barney in the early 60s. Not only was he a fantastic musician he was also the nicest person I’ve ever met.
Barney’s tech Milt was really great to me when as kid I wandered in with an ES100 I’d gotten in a swap down in SOUth Central, with no idea what it was. He made that guitar sound really great, in spite of all the mistreatment it had had.
