Huey Lewis and the News album “Sports”
Both Charlie Deal and the 2 A.M. Club became quasi-famous in 1984 when Huey Lewis and the News had a blockbuster album called Sports which featured on its album cover a picture at the club’s bar. Prominently in view on the wall behind the band is a Charlie Deal toilet seat guitar.
Charlie Deal, affectionately known as “Toilet Seat Charlie,” was a beloved figure in Mill Valley, California. In 1965, he crafted a guitar using a toilet seat, giving birth to the now-iconic “toilet seat guitar.”
Charlie’s creations were not just musical instruments but also cultural artifacts. He often rode his bicycle around town with a toilet seat hanging from the handlebars, embodying the quirky spirit of Mill Valley.
Sadly, Charlie passed away on October 30, 2007
