This was a cherished institution for over four decades. Established in 1972 by Rodney Albin, the brother of Janis Joplin’s bassist, the store began as Acoustic Music before undergoing several name changes and ownership transitions. In 1980, it was renamed Haight Ashbury Music Center and became a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s musical heritage.

The store gained renown for its extensive inventory, offering a wide range of musical instruments, accessories, and services.

In 2019, after nearly 47 years of operation, owner Massoud Badakhshan announced the closure of the Haight Ashbury Music Center. Citing escalating rent costs and the challenges posed by online retail competition.
