Beach Boys Childhood Home Plaque

Former Location –

It was here in the home of parents Murry and Audree that Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson grew to adulthood and developed their musical skills. During Labor Day weekend 1961, they, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine, gathered here to record a tape of their breakthrough song “Surfin‘”.

Although the Beach Boys became synonymous with surfing culture, the Wilson family home was actually located about six miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. Ironically, Dennis Wilson was the only genuine surfer in the group. Nevertheless, the neighborhood and Southern California lifestyle surrounding the house inspired the band’s early songs about surfing, hot rods, sunshine, and teenage freedom.

The site was designated California Historical Landmark No. 1041 in August 2004.

The home was demolished in the mid-1980s during construction of the Century Freeway.
