The song was originally recorded by The Penguins as a demo at former big band bassist Ted Brinson’s garage studio in October 1954, with producer Dootsie Williams of DooTone Records. “Earth Angel
” reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart for three weeks in early 1955.
Dootsie was a jazz trumpeter who distributed MGM records in local “race” stores out of the trunk of his Buick. He decided to cut his own music on Dootone and released an immediate hit with “Earth Angel” in 1955.
There have been many covers of the song, but The Penguins’ version is considered by many to be one of the first records which could be described as rock and roll to hit the national pop charts.
