In 1970, guitarist Joe Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton moved into the small apartment. Soon after, vocalist/guitarist Steven Tyler and drummer Joey Kramer joined in. According to the band’s history, the apartment was cramped with amps and gear.
Many of the band’s earliest songs were written in this apartment. For instance, the track Movin’ Out — on their first album — was supposedly recorded on a waterbed in that apartment.
The apartment served as the creative and literal home-base for the band as they rehearsed, wrote, and planned before hitting it big.
In 2012 the band played a free concert outside the apartment, and a commemorative plaque was installed to mark its significance. The building became part of what’s called the Music Museum of New England’s “Boston Music Trail,” acknowledging it as a historic site in Boston’s rock history.
During the 2012 ceremony the band members also left handprints in the sidewalk in front of the building.
