In the mid-1960s, Sly Stone was not yet famous worldwide; he was a disc jockey at a soul/rhythm-and-blues station called KSOL in the San Francisco Bay Area.
He was also working as a record producer for Autumn Records, a local label producing records for San Francisco-area area bands including The Beau Brummels, The Mojo Men, and early work with Grace Slick’s first band, The Great Society.
Meanwhile, he was putting together what would become Sly & the Family Stone — bringing together musicians in a racially and gender-integrated lineup, something highly unusual at the time.
After his first hit record, Sly Stone bought a house for his parents and rehearsed with Sly and the Family Stone in the basement here where he also lived for a time.
