Former Location –
In the 60s, The Tropicana was a low rent hotel appealing to struggling musicians and for a time was partially owned by baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax. The place was nearby the Troubadour and Barney’s Beanery, and as the rock music scene grew up around those two venues, the Tropicana thrived.
Long-term residents included members of The Byrds, The Runaways, The Ramones, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley and Ricky Lee Jones.
Jim Morrison stayed at the Tropicana on and off before moving into the Alta Cienega Motel which was around the corner. Rumor has it that Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac landed their recording contact while staying here.
In 1987 the motel was torn down and is now Ramada Plaza West Hollywood Hotel and Suites.
