Nudie Cohn was the country tailor to the stars. He was born Nuta Kotlyarenko on December 15, 1902, in Kyiv (then in the Russian Empire.) He made famous outfits for Elvis, Hank Williams, John Wayne, Roy Rogers, John Lennon and Eric Clapton.
He created Elvis Presley’s gold lamé “Nudie suit” that appeared on the album 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong.
Gram Parsons had a famously outrageous suit by Nudie featuring pills, poppies, naked women, marijuana leaves and a giant cross.
Nudies closed down for good in 1995, 11 years after his death.
