Keith Richards Arrested

The charges were serious enough that he was facing the possibility of years in prison and a ban from Canada.

A local advocate working with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) wrote to the court with an unusual proposal. Instead of sending Richards to prison, she suggested he use his influence to help raise money for people who depended on public support to live.

The judge agreed.

In April 1979, The Rolling Stones performed a special benefit concert in Oshawa, Ontario, raising significant funds for the CNIB and turning what could have been a career-ending scandal into one of the most unusual alternative sentences in music history.
