Comprised of just over 7 acres, Lindley Meadow is one of the greatest green spaces in Golden Gate Park. Its grassy area stretches along the south edge of JFK Drive in the center of the park, going down a steep bank into a wide flat space with picnic tables and BBQ grills bordered by eucalyptus trees.
On September 28, 1975 Jerry Garcia and Friends (really The Grateful Dead) returned from a year off to play a free concert with the Jefferson Starship here.

Approximately June 1975, Journey played here, celebrating their new name (they were on KSAN to promote the gig, and ask for band name suggestions). I was there, freezing my butt off, as it was a typical cold Summer day in the City! This was of course BEFORE Steve Perry joined the band; Greg Rolie handled the vocals back then.
The best places in Golden Gate Park were the Polo Fields (Gathering of Tribes fame), Speedway Meadows and the Panhandle. A lot of bands played Speedway Meadows. I remember seeing Cream play there a couple days after they played the Fillmore. Don’t want to forget the band shell which came with it’s own natural amplifier.
