Otis Redding rented a houseboat with his manager while staying in San Francisco for some gigs at Basin Street West in 1967. This is the place that inspired him to co-write with guitarist Steve Cropper his mega hit “Dock of the Bay“.
After Otis was killed in a plane crash, Cropper mixed “Dock of the Bay” at Stax Studios. As Otis had requested, Cropper added the sound of seagulls and waves crashing in the background of the song, mimicking the sounds he heard when he was staying on the houseboat here.
