The broader Bethel Woods Center for the Arts is located on the same grounds as the original Woodstock Music & Art Fair site (August 1969). The center opened in 2006; the museum component opened in 2008.

The site spans roughly 1,000 acres and includes performance venues, educational programs, a campground, and museum facilities.

The museum’s stated aim is to “explore the unique experience of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, its significance as a culminating event of a decade of radical cultural transformation, and the legacies of the Sixties and Woodstock today.”

It goes beyond music nostalgia: The exhibits cover political, social, and cultural change in the 1960s (civil rights, Vietnam War, fashion, youth culture) and how that era still resonates.
