Not sure wy this refers to “the opening” of the Coffee Gallery in 1965. It was open way before that. I used to hang out there in early 1962 after moving from L.A. to San Francisco. Perhaps it was closed for a period of time after I left S.F. for the East Bay.
I played there regularly in 1968-69. It was a great place. Chill, and very accommodating to artists. The bar was separated from the “music room,” and people were there to listen! It was unnerving, knowing that there were probably some really good guitar players out there listening, but — glad to say– all was good. Great memories.
Sad to say, Tim Hardin, one of the truly great songwriters of the 60’s, had a bad outing there during my tenure, although I did not have a chance to witness it… fortunately– just kind of thrilled that I played on the same stage 🙂
