Sound City Studios’ building was originally a production factory for British musical instrument manufacturer, Vox. The studio was officially closed in May of 2011, but it has reopened as of early 2017.
Dave Grohl, former Nirvana drummer and current lead singer of the Foo Fighters, purchased the custom Neve 8078 Console from Studio A, and installed it in his private recording studio. In 2013, a documentary on the studio was made by Grohl titled Sound City.
When Buckingham Nicks by Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks was being recorded here, the couple met Mick Fleetwood and struck up a friendship. In 1974, Lindsey and Stevie met Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie and John McVie to discuss them joining the next, and most successful incarnation of Fleetwood Mac at El Carmen Restaurant in Los Angeles. Within a year of joining the band, Fleetwood Mac released “Fleetwood Mac” which reached number one on the Billboard 200, and spent 37 weeks in the top 10.
The famous sound board that Grohl purchased contributed the studios signature sound to more than one hundred certified gold and platinum albums.
