Former Location –
In an attempt to duplicate the free form nature of a live Grateful Dead show, the band pieced together dozens of live concerts to create their “Anthem of the Sun” album here.
This was also the location where the Kingston Trio recorded most of their albums until the original group disbanded in 1967 following their final two-week engagement at the Hungry i.

What a mindblower! I worked in the basement of the Sentinel building for a Zoetrope film in the early 80’s – maybe 1983? It was sort of a recording studio and sort of a production space. What must have been the control room was used for sound design by Richard Beggs, who was Francis Coppola’s sound designer. I worked in a side room off of what must have been the actual recording space where the above recordings were made. I never knew the history, just that it it was a place Francis used for film making.
I am a fan of all of the “notable” bands and recordings from above. Thanks for the history, and for a new story I can tell about that space. True San Francisco-ness and a great part of North Beach history.
