106.9 on the FM dial in the San Francisco bay area was the home to KMPX from 1962 to 1978 as such, the station is often referred to as the birthplace of underground radio. When they started to fit in rock music not played on the AM dial between foreign-language broadcasts, ratings picked up.
On August 6, 1967, the rock music format was heard twenty-four hours of the day for the first time ever.
