tom donahue’s simulcast birthday bash…
on a damp night in ’69/’70 i attended ( hi, Joy! ) a small birthday celebration for ” big daddy ” at pacific high. the event was simulcast, i suppose on ksan. tom was wandering about, in & out of the engineering booth. the performers were stoneground & the new riders. this was several years before pigpen’s demise. there were no risers or anything, just carpets on the floor, a lot of dancing, etc. it was a blast, of course. is there a recording extant? any other participants care to chime in?
correction: Just for the record, Big Daddy’s birthday simulcast was 1972.
thank-you! that helps me out quite a lot, actually. i was really getting around back then ( well, i still am, ) and the chronology of events is sometimes unclear.
Me and David Soul
There is a picture if me in People magazine with David Soul outside this studio in 1975. I was seven years old, we lived across the street in a flat. Cool memories! I have that People mag and its cool to read that history.
Tina, what an experience! I know that David Soul used the Eagles for background vocals, also Norton Buffalo was in his Band of friends and his best London friend is Hugh Burns famous studio guitarist for many bands-most famous for his crying guitar in Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street ” and now accompanies David on his Pablo Nervano Poem readings. The two had a radio show in London. He loves kids so I am sure he treated you right. You should write a memoir of your Life across from Pacific High Studios
does anyone remember my uncle John Karcich
Who worked as an engineer at the studo?
Justin, I’ve been asking and seeking that exact question, Who worked as the engineers and tech support, time keepers etc. di da di da,
engineers put their hearts into getting the electrical plus on tape as clean and hot as possible to be able to help the mix down flow, I’ve been through the entire source of the concertvault.com and the only thing mentioned was Pacific High Recording Studios and broadcast on KSAN radio, no mention of Wally Heider being well known for his excellent studio and remote location recordings or his his superb engineering skills, his talent and crew brought some of the greatest bands in rock history’s recordings. to get beyond what i just mentioned we would have to refer to the original LP — which in some ways I answered my own question, who had a hand in the actual recording of Van Morrison at Winterland 2/1/72 -2/2/72 — probably has something to do with royalties.
But on the a plaque the acknowledgement Wally Heider’s San Francisco Studios made me realize I crossed paths with every single one of the names on in being in the industry, The last time I was in the Fillmore West was around 87?, one of the local sound engineers Jim Dunning called me asked if I could break away from my shop, sure Jim, I didn’t take to much notice of the rigs parked out front. got up to the security gate, the guard ask what’s up, said I don’t have a clue, Jim called and needs me to work this afternoon, he said yeah go ahead, walked up the side stairs, the very second I pulled back the big black drape, Try a little help from my friends started, I must have stopped breathing for a min as I see and hear Joe Cocker start singing while my eyes moved from the left of the stage to the right anyone male / female who was apart of the 60’s was on the stage, after the second verse they stopped ad started working on arrangements, so I started looking for Jim, I didn’t find him unless he was up in one of the lofts, sat i the back for an hour, then I left, went out, guard asked, how’d it go,I said beats me I can’t find him, what the heck is gong on here, walked down, the forty foot moving vans parked we VH1 Mobil recording and the other was there Mobil video lab, So Jim Dunning, if you come across this, You Got Me, Got Me Good!!
After that period I picked up mixing gigs through Europe and Asia and life keeps going on. I read a few books by C.G.Jung, the Subconscious mind retains everything!, it takes, a smell, a sound, even words to trigger these experiences that we thought were long gone under the bridge decades ago. Justin : ) I hope you come across the engineer of your inquire. Tony Vei.
Hello,
My Brother David Brown was an engineer at Pacific High and at Wally Heider … later at Columbia.
He was Very involved in “Working Mans Dead” In fact Jerry Garcia “taught him” how to do a certain substance.
David became Very good friends with Bob Matthews the Dead producer.
David went on to record some awesome albums.
Santana — Taj Mahal —Boz Scaggs —- Steve Miller — on and on and on
My Brother Dave passed away on Saturday Dec. 2 2017
If anyone has ANY stories about him PLease share with me.
Thank You SO much
Rock and Roll FOREVER
Yes I knew John. He lived in a converted store front on Balboa St. I tnink 43 rd Ave was the nearest cross st.
John told me some crazy stories about sex, drugs and rock and roll in that place
I’m doing some research. Are Pacific Studios and Pacific High Recording Studios the same place? Different time, different name? Does anyone have any pics of the studio inside from 67-69? And or any pics of Sly & The Family Stone in session. Thanks
In the summer of 1971 Tom Donohue did a Tower of Power and Big Bad Beautiful Day simulcast from Wally Heider’s on KFOG or KSAN. There was some sort of radio contest that I didn’t win, but me and my friend Larry Sasnow drove over there anyway and walked right in.
We sat down on some oriental rugs in front of the “stage” along with maybe 25 other people and had our minds blown. Was anyone else there or can someone provide the date?
marvin gardens, the band i was in, recorded at pacific high recorders in 1968.
