ah yes…the mighty Van Halen
I remember that event,i worked parking control, crowd control, and the very best back stage i remember being 10 feet away from Stevie Nicks it was awsome she is my fav great memories lots of fun good food it was an experience thats for sure great music.
I was stage carpenter for 83 us. Hired by IYATSE union to build the risers for all the bands. Because the stage manager Rob promised he could put more bands per day than ever before with a collapsible riser. But union would not have it. They said “it cant be done. We’ve tried it . its not possible.”So i had remodeled a house resently for business agent. And so mr. Hamlet hired me stage Carpenter There is close to 200 Stage and backstage hands and me and my buddy had the only on stage passes giving out .
I didn’t realize at the time that I was set up for failure but I remember the Old Stage hands walking by work area patting me on the back and say it’s not going to work yet but it’s not going to be your fault don’t worry about it none of the Union guys would help me so I started building risers claps will and about 10 days before the show I hadn’t got any of them bill yet and they were not going to work like this said so I was working on a jig and one of the stagehands came by and told me Jed just cut those trying was out of that piece of plywood and that’s being we are side you won’t have to build a side just cut it out of plywood so I did and that’s and that’s how it worked would not have worked any other way but thanks to that stagehand from New York just walked by suggested that the whole show went on. I Can Only Imagine what would have happened if he didn’t walk by and show me how to do it some of the band’s wouldn’t have been able to play and never mind major riots imagine for the band’s not being able to play because of the risers weren’t bill. I was just twenty-two years. But the whole show went off without a hitch it was awesome you might have seen me backstage building 4 Judas Priest 10×10 Cube he drove out of on a Harley. Which was the the riser for the drummer.im trying to write a book about the whole deal . lots of cool stories and experience s
