Some great early black groups played here at what came to be known as the West Coast version of New York’s Apollo Theater.
Such greats as the Ike and Tina Turner Revue, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Commodores and Parliament-Funkadelic as well as The Temptations, The Four Tops and The Supremes all played here.

Curious to find answer to my thought that Los Angeles somehow may have been the incubator of a sound that blossomed in the 70s but maybe started there in the late 60s. A few major groups that broke out with R&B, Funk and Pop in the early 70s which were case in point EW&F, Parliament Funkadelics and Kool and The Gang on the first intro albums had this predominate Jazz sounds at least their first albums. By early 70s each had worked thru jazz and found their own unique sound and the rest the of 70s and forward was history. Maybe a side note to that also was that the West Coast sent Dennis Coffey to Motown with the wah-wah peddle and came out with the hit ‘Scorpio’ and a new sound on the East Coast, Motown’s new direction showed thru Temp’s ‘Psychedelic Shack’ ( more socially conscious music).
But still the main question is, was the West Coast (LA) and maybe Mavericks Flat the incubator for the new jazz, funk and pops monster groups of the 70s to come into being ?
