My band “The 7 Pound Ear” (Im not kidding about that name) also known as “California Earthquake”, played at the Magic Mushroom in 1968 before My trip to Vietnam. I was the drummer. I was 19. Some of the best days of my life. The Magic Mushroom was a farout freakey place to groveout… Totally Bitchen, Man! But you had to be hip to gain enterance. I’m not jiven ya…
I was there with a friend I had to leave he told me I should have stayed the last band played a long song he thought was called light my fire does anyone know did the doors play there?
Yes, I was there. I was in high school and it was during Christmas vacation. The Doors did play. They played Whiskey Bar, Break on through, Soul Kitchen and Light My Fire. They may have played more but I left. It was late, like 1:00 AM and freezing out. I was on a motorcycle and just wanted to get home because it was so cold out. At the time only released Break on Through and I thought that was their hit so I left shortly after that. I did not know they would become such a huge band and I just walked out before they left the stage. Love and three other bands played as well. Iron Butterfly showed up and was supposed to play, but did not. They had a gig at the Hulabalou or the Whiskey? So they did not play. Of course later, I was mad at myself for leaving but got to see the Doors at the Hollywood Bowl with the Chamber Brothers and Steppen Wolf on July 5, 1968. They released a live album and Video of that concert in 1987.
I danced at the Magic Mushroom behind a screen nude before it closed. Anyone remember that?
I played there in 1968 with Hunger. We did a heavy rendition of ” She’s not There”
with a psychedelic light show and nude dancers behind a black see-through curtain. That place was a wild version of The Whiskey Ago-go! The crowd was fantastic!
I saw the Doors open for Love in late 1966 at the Cinnamon Cinder. I think it was early September as that’s the only date I could find anywhere online. Wish I’d kept my ticket stubs for all the times I saw the Doors from ’66 to ’68, but I know this gig was the first one. Dave Diamond on KBLA underground radio told us about it.
