The Newport Folk Festival, an annual folk-oriented music festival at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island was founded in 1959 and continues on to this day. The Festival is renowned for introducing Joan Baez and Bob Dylan to the world.

The inaugural festival lineup included Pete Seeger, The Kingston Trio, The New Lost City Ramblers, and many others.

On July 25, 1965 Dylan was booed by some fans when he played here with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and many fans felt he had abandoned his folk roots.

In 1969, Johnny Cash performed on opening night of the 1969 Newport Folk Festival. Cash convinced the producer of the festival to allow Kris Kristofferson to join him onstage. Kristofferson’s performance of Me and Bobby McGee and other songs helped launch his musical career.
