Former Location –
Located in a cramped basement New York City’s Theater District, the Scene was one of the hippest venues in late-’60s Manhattan. When it opened in 1964, The Scene wasn’t yet a rock club—it was more of an insider lounge for performers. That changed around 1966, when Paul began booking bands regularly. The shift was immediate and electric, turning the venue into one of the most sought-after rooms in New York.

The club abruptly closed on July 1969. One widely cited reason was that Steve Paul refused to pay protection money to organized crime, which led to disturbances that threatened the club’s liquor license.
