The Village Gate was a nightclub in Greenwich Village, New York. The club opened in 1958 and permanently closed in February of 1994.
Throughout its many years, the Village Gate featured many top jazz and Rock N Roll musicians including: John Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, the Velvet Underground, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis and Aretha Franklin, who made her first New York appearance there.
The club hosted a benefit for Timothy Leary in May 1970 that featured Jimi Hendrix and Allen Ginsberg.
