Previously known as the Overton Park Shell and the Raoul Wallenberg Shell, the venue is an outdoor amphitheater built during the great depression as part of President Roosevelt’s “Public Works Projects”.
On July 30, 1954 Elvis Presley took the stage before headliner Slim Whitman. Elvis stole the show in what music historians call the first-ever rock and roll show. In the middle of the first song, a stage-frightened Elvis unconsciously began to make a move he made in the studio, shaking his leg in time with the music. The crowd of mostly girls went crazy, confusing both Elvis and his band.
Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Alex Chilton and many others also made their first public appearances on the stage.
