Lines of long-stemmed chorus girls kicked high to the music when this club first opened on Market Street in 1931. Gin was served in coffee cups while everybody puzzled over the optical illusion provided by Dolfina, The Girl in the Fishbowl: She appeared to swim nude in the fish tank behind the bar… you can still find her there today.
After the club moved to its current location, many pop/rock acts played here such as Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell, Marvin Gaye and The 5th Dimension.
In 1975 The Tubes gave SRO shows nightly and Iggy Pop played here as well.
Beginning in 1992 an annual event to benefit Thunder Road, California’s only substance abuse treatment center for teens and their families was started here with such stars as Van Morrison, Huey Lewis and Bonnie Raitt.
