Former Location –
The Chateau Liberte was a legendary rock & roll bar in the Santa Cruz mountains. It was an old stagecoach stop in the mid 19th century. Many bands from the Bay Area played here including Hot Tuna, NRPS, and members of Moby Grape.
The cover of the first Doobie Brothers album was photographed in the bar and the Doobie’s were regulars here before they hit it big with Manager Bruce Cohn at the helm.

The Tubes (when they had two drummers) and their predecessors, the Beans, played the Chateau in the very early 70’s.
I worked with Yea Productions in the 70’s when they were bringing bands to the Chateau. I designed and printed posters and tickets for many shows that included Moby Grape, Steve Miller band, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver – too many to count. Unfortunately none of my own copies of the art I produced survived. I would love to locate some of this old artwork. I have many great memories of my experience there, incredible music, good times…
Calling Capt. Whizzo! Calling Dave Berge! Do you remember the awesome light shows? (Or the sexy bartender who had two different colored eyes.) Just thinking about those summer nights at the Chateau and seeing the Doobies or Hot Tuna or the Beans/Tubes makes me go a big wet one. Friends at the time included Michael Ahern, Steven Searles, James Mullins, ….if you knew any of these guys you were in good company. Sadly, most have passed, but hey, weren’t those some fu-fu-fun times?!
Ok let’s try this again…Who out there remembers Capt. Whizzo and the sexy bartender with two different colored eyes, Dave Berge? Sure I remember bands like the Doobie Bros. and Hot Tuna (with Will Scarlett and Papa John Creach), and the Tubes/Beans…but let’s not forget Mose Allison and Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids with their “rack contest”! Man, those days may be a thousand years ago, but in my heart it was just yesterday….
They were the best of times, best music and the Sunday’s were amazing – you are right seems like yesterday a million days ago! Memories!
Yeah, this place was a trip. We played there along with Country Weather, a rock band from Walnut Creek that included Greg Douglass. Only saw it at night, never realized there were larger grounds and a pool!
