Former Location –

The Straight Theater, formerly know as the Haight Street Movie Theater was demolished in 1981, but it had a short but distinctive life in the history of Rock N’ Roll. The Grateful Dead used this location as a rehearsal hall before its official opening in July, 1967. They appeared with Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Country Joe and the Fish, The Charlatans and others for the grand opening.

Many, if not all of the local bay area bands and touring shows played here in the brief three years (1967 – 1969) of it existence including; Sons of Champlin, Peter Paul & Mary, Congress of Wonders, Charlie Musselwhite, Savage Resurrection, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, Santana Blues Band, Clover, Granny Goose, It’s A Beautiful Day, Blue Cheer and Little Richard with an All Soul Revue.
