In 1981 Bill Graham started weekly shows here with such famous acts as Eurythmics, Men at Work, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Metallica and Eddie Money. The property was sold in 1984 and is now an AMC Movie Theater.

I got so excited thinking the SF Kabuki looked like this at one time, but after some internet detective work I believe this photo is of a Kabuki theatre in Tokyo, namely this one: http://www.kabuki-za.co.jp/
You are correct. Thank you. I have updated the picture
Is it possible that this location was used as a venue for events connected with the San Francisco International Film Festival in May 1988?
It was the home of the San Francisco International Film Festival for many years.
The gorgeous Kabuki-themed interior with its mile-high ceiling was a throwback to luxurious music halls of the past. It’s where I saw Oingo Boingo, the Residents, and the 1984 New Year’s Eve extravaganza by the Tubes.
I saw The Sisters of Mercy play there in 1984 or 1985. The opening bands were Roman Holiday and Gene Loves Jezebel. One of the best shows I’ve seen in the past 41 years, and I’ve been to roughly 80 concerts at a minimum.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers show at the Kabuki in 1983 was terrific!
I saw a ton of shows at the Kabuki Nightclub in San Francisco. When Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers released their debut album, they played there many, many times. I saw every show. It was amazing! Some shows had less than 50 people present. They played a lot of cover songs like “Shout”, “Route 66”, and “Don’t Bring Me Down” and I loved every moment of it. The bands that Bill Graham promoted, all played there; Eddie Money was there a lot too. It was fabulous as the acoustics were great in that place. Such an intimate setting.
