Former Location –
Almost immediately after opening in 1983, this 600 seat location called Wolfgang’s was a hit, it’s easier to list who did not play here then did, but here is a brief list of those that did: U2, Midnight Oil, Randy Newman, Todd Rundgren, Jerry Garcia and Spinal Tap.
In July of 1987, a fire broke out in the hotel above the club, the combination of smoke and water damage closed the doors on a Bay Area institution forever.

Didn’t it reopen as the 7th Note for a short time in the 1990s?
The club location has opened under different management several times but the nightclub division of Bill Graham Presents called AKG did not reopen it. Most of us that worked there transferred to working at the Warfield and later The Fillmore.
Saw some great gigs there…back in the ’80s. Uli Roth & Yngwie Malmsteen (to name a few). Most memorable gig was Steve Morse Band. Had private balcony seats with my bass player at that time. Who comes in to sit at the seat/table next to me before that show started? Carlos Santana.
Cheers,
Daniel Lars
I saw Jerry Garcia/John Kahn in 85 and The Dinosaurs also but don’t remember it being a 600 seat venue. I could swear we sat on the floor, first date with future wife.
I saw Garcia/Kahn in 85 and you are right that it was not seated. We were crowded around as I recall.
Anyone know who took the Wolfgang’s photo? Please email me at slipnut01@gmail.com
Saw Weather Update in late Sep 1986. Great show. Had floor (table) seating. Probably the closest I’ve ever sat to a band of that stature and I could read the writing on Zawinul’s keyboards. Plus got to see a rare lineup which included Steve Khan on guitar. Sadly, the last time I saw Wayne Shorter. So sorry the venue had to close under those circumstances.
Correction–Wayne Shorter wasn’t part of the Weather “Update ” version.
